CBE Roundtable
Cross Bronx Expressway, New York
This week Michiel and Nadya together with Alexander D’Hooghe and the team of ORG-PerMod were in New York conducting a brainstorming session on the transformation of the Cross Bronx Expressway at the American Institute of Architects Center for Architecture (AIANY.org).
Loving the Bronx
With over 45 participants, the local Bronx community organizations “Loving the Bronx” and “The Point” amongst them, the event included an introduction to the urban challenges of the borough by the former Director of Planning and Development with the Office of the Bronx Borough President James Rausse; a presentation of the two CCNY and Hunter College student projects; and a lively brainstorming session focusing on the potential future strategies.
Healthy CitIES
Stimulating a great response from the public health professionals in the room, in particular, Michiel talked about the potential of design to improve the quality of life as well as the health outcomes of good landscape architecture using the examples of our work in Amsterdam. Using their curatorship of the capping of the Antwerp Ring Road as a reference, Alexander D’Hooghe discussed the importance of genuine community involvement and the need for political commitment to the process.
Lance Jay Brown, the president of the Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization (CSU) and the former president of the AIANY generously co-hosted the event with us, helping us attract a good number of participants from the DCP, EDC, and other key agencies.
When in New York...
In the next couple of weeks, we will be developing a strategy of how to capitalize on the success of this event to further develop our role and our presence in New York and the larger United States. In an effort to make new friends and potential collaborators, Michiel and Nadya visited the offices of One Architecture, SCAPE, and Buro Happold and received the most valuable business development advice from the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York, which also sponsored food and drinks for the event.
