Environmental vision Utrecht Overvecht approved
Sustainably utilizing densification and improving liveability
How can the livability of a post-war neighborhood be enhanced through densification? This is the question the City of Utrecht asked PosadMaxwan, Felixx Landscape Architects & Planners, TAUW Nederland, Goudappel, Shift architecture urbanism, Urban Reality, and Plan B Advies, to address in the Environmental Vision. And, we're very pleased to announce last Thursday the Utrecht City Council approved the Overvecht Environmental Vision, and will begin implementing its ambitions towards 2040.
Overvecht will undergo an ambitious transformation in the coming years. 5,000 homes, 3,000 workplaces, amenities and dozens of hectares of landscape will be added within the existing district. And all while using minimal demolition, improving (traffic) safety, and strengthening social cohesion.
The Environmental Vision aims to utilize the densification and transformation of Overvecht to sustainably contribute to an improvement of the quality of life. Based on a hierarchical approach, Nature-Based Solutions were proposed for the conservation of ecosystems. Whilst strengthening the quality of the existing green space and preserving the local identity, the vision focuses on densification around public transport hubs.
The vision sets out to:
- Diversify the housing stock
- Prioritize cyclists and pedestrians
- Strengthen neighborhood centers
- Make public spaces more climate-adaptive
- Create space for new homes and workplaces
- Add a new high-quality public transport route
- Enhance green spaces for sports, play, and social interaction
