Felixx at Duurzaamste Kilometer congress
What defines the ideal street as a public space? What approaches are needed for designing streets as healthy spaces? Felixx attended the ‘Duurzaamste Kilometer’ congress in Leiden to present our Design Guideline ‘New Space’ in order to share our knowledge and strategies on how to realize a healthy public space.
The Design Guideline reimagines how we conceive public spaces, exploring innovative approaches to street design. The Guideline proposes a design method in which mobility is no longer normative but where accessibility, safety, perception, health, social interaction, ecology, climate adaptation, economics and cultural history together make up the street. By naming these ten dimensions at the outset, a new balance between all these interests is created.
Previously, we designed a public space for Groningen, and currently, we’re working on the development of the healthy street in Maastricht, a crucial step in making a significant impact. We hope many other cities will follow for similar transformations.
Duurzaamste Kilometer (DKZM), in collaboration with MIRT, organized a conference to address current issues and tasks for the Leiden station area (and other station areas). With the lessons learned by the DZKM over the years, the congress offered concrete solutions based on their knowledge and network.
