Felixx selected for Water as Leverage Kenya!
We are excited to announce that Felixx has been selected to lead the Water as Leverage Nakuru program in Kenya. In collaboration with an outstanding team of international and local experts, this initiative brings together Witteveen+Bos (Netherlands), Bantu Design Studio (South Africa), CSC Strategy & Finance (Netherlands), TU Delft (Netherlands), Planning Development Consulting Ltd. (Kenya), and Egerton University (Kenya). Building on our ongoing involvement in the Water as Leverage initiative in Cartagena, Colombia, this project marks a significant step forward in Felixx’s mission to advance global water management planning for sustainable and resilient cities.
Nakuru, situated in one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions, faces urgent challenges from unsustainable water demands, depleting groundwater reserves, and severe environmental degradation. Rapid urbanization and the accelerating impacts of climate change have made these issues critical, requiring immediate and transformative action to ensure the city’s future.
Our "Nature kama kujiinua" (Nature as Leverage) proposal integrates Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) into an innovative Nature-Based Sponge System (NBSS) framework. By shifting from traditional “draining” methods to forward-thinking “retaining” strategies, this approach aligns urban growth with natural water cycles, addressing water scarcity, enhancing resilience, and preserving Nakuru’s unique ecological and cultural heritage.
This program highlights the urgency of Nakuru’s challenges and reaffirms Felixx’s commitment to providing scalable, impactful solutions for climate-resilient urban development. Together with our partners, we aim to transform Nakuru into a leading example of sustainable urbanization in Africa and beyond.
Water as Leverage (WaL), initiated by the Netherlands government, is a proven approach for catalyzing just and sustainable urban water and climate resilience. It is an inclusive design-driven approach to develop, finance and implement projects that cut across sectoral and administrative boundaries, thereby across SDG’s. With successful programs in Chennai (India), Khulna (Bangladesh), Semarang (Indonesia), and Cartagena (Colombia), Nakuru marks WaL's first initiative in Africa, extending its impact to a new and vital region.
