Ekaterinburg City Campus
Integrated Public Realm Strategy
The Lenin Avenue is the backbone of the center of Ekaterinburg. The Park of Kommunars is situated along it. Many new development are happening around the park, turning the area into the new entrance of the city. Therefore it needs to become a strong identity carrier, reflecting the rich and diverse culture of Ekaterinburg.
The redevelopment of the Park offers the opportunity to create cohesion between the diverse existing spaces, creating both a realm for the city and providing facilities to the ambient residential areas. Realizing this ambition requires an integrated approach. Not the development of singular designs for the parks, streets, squares and buildings in the area. But a strategy focusing on the connection between all these separate elements: not a park but a campus.
Strengthening the relation between public realm and the built environment creates several zones: the recreational park connected to the residential quarters, the cultural plaza with the youth center, medicinal gardens in front of the hospital, sport parks around the station, and the cemetery as a quiet meditation park. The zones are linked into a connected campus by integrating infrastructure into the public realm. Roads are not designed as sheer streets with infrastructural means, but as linear public spaces for circulation and staying.
