Ásbrú Enterprise Park
Gradual Redevelopment of a Former Military Base
Ásbrú is a former NATO base, located next to Keflavik International Airport. The navy left in 2011. Despite the fact that the area lacks the spatial qualities to function as a residential neighborhood, it gradually transformed into a community of entrepreneurs, students and business. This current vibrant character is not deployed to improve the area. The only prospect is on the very long term, the development of Ásbrú Enterprise Park. A full-grown airport city with a university, industrial and residential developments.
So what about the meantime? How to support, and strengthen the current dynamics? The plan selects 4 key ambitions of the masterplan, and connects them to the current situation. Based on the specific conditions of the area, we break down the 4 themes into small and low cost interventions, able to be implemented and realized on the short term. The different parts of the toolbox are independent, can be developed separately or phased.
The project area offers 3 characteristic zones. Each zone allows for a different focus: either on the improvement of private, community or public space. Each focus relates to the scale and impact of the applied interventions, creating three neighborhoods with a different identity: Garden Paradise, Courtyard Mosaic and Green Park.
