The ecological principle
Ecosystems are structurally complex. They contain many species, many functions, and many relationships operating at different scales simultaneously. This heterogeneity is the source of resilience. When conditions change or one element fails, diverse systems can adapt and recover because other elements can absorb the disruption. Redundancy is capacity held in reserve.
Why it matters for cities
Uniform systems – mono-functional spaces, single-species plantings, homogeneous urban programmes – are structurally fragile. They perform well under stable conditions and fail under pressure. They require high levels of maintenance to sustain a state that nature would not sustain on its own. And they capture only part of the ecological, social, and cultural value a site can generate.
Diverse systems perform multiple functions simultaneously. They are more resilient, more adaptive, and require less maintenance in the long term. They also support a broader range of users, species, and applications, which is both an ecological and a social argument.
How Felixx applies it
We design landscapes with structural variation: layered planting schemes using multiple native species, spatial differentiation across a site, variation in microclimate and ground condition, and a programme that supports multiple forms of use and ecological function simultaneously.
Monocultures and uniform solutions are ecologically brittle. Diversity is what holds a system together at every scale – from the soil to the city block.

In nature
The oak tree (Quercus robur) supports over 2,300 species across all structural layers from root to canopy – a single organism functioning as an entire ecosystem. The baobab (Adansonia digitata) hosts birds, bats, bees, fungi, and humans simultaneously, producing food, medicine, and water: biodiversity as structural abundance. It's not diverse because someone designed it that way. It's diverse because diversity is how the system sustains itself.
