New Space - Design Guideline Liveability of Public Space

More space for greenery, sports, play & social interaction

Commissioned by the municipality, Felixx worked together with Goudappel, Stipo & Marco te Brömmelstroet on 'New Space' (Design Guideline Livability of Public Space) of Groningen. The guideline is an inspiration document for a different kind of public space, with more space for green, sports, play and social interaction and less for parked cars and bicycles. Today the Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved the provisional version of New Space.

A NEW PERSPECTIVE

In New Space we take the street as our starting point, the most human scale sample size of our cities. In order to design streets for people, it is important that we once again start to see the street as 'a shared space', a public space for people instead of a functional connection between point A and point B. To this end, the guideline introduces a new approach to designing streets.

TEN DIMENSIONS

We no longer take a one-dimensional approach to designing the street in which mobility is the sole guiding principle. Instead, mobility will join accessibility, safety, human perception, health, social interaction, ecology, climate adaptation, economy and cultural history in making the street; the ten dimensions of the street.

From one perspective towards ten dimensions of the street.

PRELIMINARY VERSION

New Space is also a tool to work together on a future-proof public space for everyone. The document shows which dimensions are necessary for a qualitative and valued public space. On Monday July 5th at 20.30 hours the meeting 'In gesprek over de Leidraad Openbare Ruimte' is held in Forum Groningen. The purpose of this meeting is to inform and to discuss the provisional version of the guideline. New Space offers visual ideas for a new design. These images can help in the conversation with inhabitants about the opportunities for a better quality of life in streets and neighborhoods, in the city and the villages.
