City Gardens Tyumen

Collection of Public Space Gardens with Community Facilities

City Gardens is a new urban quarter in Tyumen. The 7,9 hectares site is centrally located within the peninsula formed by the bend of Tura river and is projected to house a population of 3000 new residents. The borders of the site are defined by four newly planned streets, connecting the site to the city center and the railroad station. North of the site there is a park with a lake. This offers the potential to continue a green network within the district.

The plan breaks with the current tradition of individual developments, increasingly depriving Russian cities of their public and green spaces. The new quarter is organized around a collection of public gardens, each of them having a different level of publicness.

They offer complementary facilities to the new residents. This results in a wide range of spaces: sport gardens, pocket parks, courtyards, neighborhood plazas, commercial terraces and kindergartens. These diverse spots are located on a shared realm, the ‘the urban carpet’. This carpet interweaves the City Gardens site with its surroundings and connects to the surrounding green space networks. Both strategies combined generate an attractive and diverse living environment for the inhabitants of the area. Meanwhile, the site offers an active and dynamic public realm to the residents of the city.
