City Square Tyumen

Urban Carpet

The new multifunctional city block is situated in the heart of the Siberian city Tyumen. It lies between the station area and the newly developed river bank, in close proximity to the commercial and cultural center. A new road connection to the river bridge runs through the MFC development giving it an important and prominent position.

The concept aims to identify this new cluster in the urban landscape, and capitalize on this private development to add qualitative public space to the city center.

The landscape is organized in 3 zones with a different public character: a public park, a semi-public foyer and a private garden. The park becomes an extensive green oasis, the garden an intensive designed parterre yard. The foyer turns the entrance of the building into a public interior space. The three spaces are joined into a connecting urban carpet, and share a circular pattern that unifies the cluster. Within its uniformity, the pattern transforms, indicating the different spaces. The circle turns into a flower, into a snowflake. It’s a subtle wink to Tyumen’s history of carpeting patterns, and an allusion to the variety of experiences the local climate provides.
