Campus Eemsdelta

A school campus as an integrated educational landscape in Appingedam

Campus Eemsdelta is a new school campus located in Appingedam, The Netherlands. Three secondary education levels, a practical study programme and a sports cluster are merged into a single facility consisting of several buildings totaling 16.600m2. Together with the surrounding outdoor space of 3.5ha, the buildings form an integral learning landscape that meets the educational needs of all schools and ensures a natural interaction with the environment. The new Eemsdelta campus will accommodate 1500 students, is energy-supplying, 100% circular and earthquake-resistant.

Campus

The organization of the campus is inspired by the historic mounds in the Groningen landscape. These small artificial hills provided protection during floods. The edges are inhabited, the buildings are oriented around a central dry spot. The Eemsdelta Campus takes over the radial set-up of these Groningen mound villages. Each school has its own ‘house’, with an individual organization, identity, and appearance. In addition to the three different secondary schools, the campus also accommodates a large number of regional sports and cultural functions: these are clustered and spatially organized so that both the schools and the neighborhood can make use of it independently. All buildings are centered around a central heart that functions as a distributor, main entrance and space for joint activities. The surrounding landscape runs through the buildings, making the Eemsdelta Campus a transparent and inviting complex.

Educational landscape

The center of the campus is a covered space between the different buildings. On the ground floor it performs as a dynamic schoolyard, connecting to the entrances and public functions of the individual schools. A quiet garden is created on the roof as a study space and classroom. The shared patio garden connects both levels.

The surrounding landscape is organized in different rooms, created by converting existing conditions into various study areas: a nursery garden, learning plaza, sports beach, exhibition park and a tiny science forest. They challenge to active use, but also provide space for rest and reflection.

Sculptural objects are placed in the rooms, stimulating specific practices: a greenhouse in the nursery garden, a work barn and ‘the house of the future’ on the learning plaza, test and measuring devices in the woods, and a stand, climbing wall, sports and games elements at the beach. These and many other objects are linked to specific lessons or studies, empowering them to use the outdoor space in relation to their educational program.

The Eemsdelta Campus as a whole is accessed via the shared entrance square, which connects with the central heart. Each school also has an individual entrance, accessed via the path network through the landscape rooms. As a result, the learning landscape is integrated with the daily routes and actions of the pupils and teachers.

A new regional link

The new campus functions as an activator in the region. The landscape park programs the rural corridor between Appingedam and Delfzijl with a green learning environment. The embankment of the Damsterdiep Canal is activated with new functions, and a primary orientation of the school and sports club.

The new campus becomes an important connection in the regional network of social facilities.  Slow traffic routes are guided through the area, establishing easy connections to all kind of services and functions in both Appingedam and Delfzijl. The campus adds to these networks with a publicly accessible program in the park.
